Through the analyses of many examples,the present article makes it clear that the translation of signified meaning,in the translation of classic Chinese poetry,is usually a better choice than that of the literal meaning,while in certain circumstances the latter one can produce desirable or even magic effects.

This paper focuses its analysis on the four aspects of meaning of an English word,namely,the denotative meaning showing the relation between meaning and things,the grammatical meaning showing the relation between mean- ing and grammar,the connotative meaning showing the relation between meaning and people and the translational meaning between words of different languages.

Translated proper names,on the other hand,might contain individual and general translational meaning as well as the meaning the SL names have already had.

The author first analyzes three components of Morris meaning theory: linguistic meaning,referential meaning and pragmatic meaning,explains how the misunderstandings of these three meanings cause pragmatic failures.

There are two aspects of word meaning: referential meaning and connotative meaning.
