符号学习(sign learning)F.e，托尔曼认为，学习并非通过尝试错误和偶然成功建立刺激与反应之间的联结，而是根据对情境的认知，形成一个完整的认知地图，进而对认知地图中符号与符号之间的关系的认知过程，这就是符号学习。托尔曼设计的方位学习实验是符号学习理论的实验依据之一。如图所示，这个实验具有S，和S:两个起点，以及F!和F:两个放置食物点。实验时把白鼠分成A和B两组，A组为反应学习组，学习任务是向右转弯，到达食物点。若从S】出发，食物放在F，;若从S:出发，食物放在FZ。B组为方位学习组，实验时只变化出发点，不变化食物点。实验结果表明，两组差异极大，A组经过72次练习后，从未达到连续10次正确转向的标准;而B组很快就学会了、.这个实验有力地支持了托尔曼的符号学习理论。鲜斗刹 (李爱丽撰梁宝勇审)
