Having clarified the notion of the word of conversion,the paper presents its review of studies so far on the said category of words in modern English and Chinese languages,and the outline and outlook of the research to be done in terms of contents,methodology,and focus.

Through the analysis on the two cognitive mechanisms and the two types of meaning extension,it is found that the metaphorical mechanism is the cognitive basis of polysemy and that the metonymic mechanism is the major cognitive motivation of conversion,which also offers a new perspective to study the change of meaning.
