This dissertation studies the purposes of selections in translation from the perspective of social macro-cultural context in China.

This paper forms an attempt to analyze the relevant socio-cultural contexts before and after the War,and points out that the different socio-cultural formations before and after the War exerted direct influence on fiction translation and led it to take on different characteristics in narrative forms and contents.

Rather, it is a complicated activity of cross-cultural communication which involves both the source language culture and the target language culture, especially the various factors in the social-cultural context of the latter.

The Influence of Socio-cultural Context on Translation;

Taking the perspectives ofnarrative and style, the present paper makes an analysis of the textual features of the translated stories by XuZhimo and Chen Xiying, and reveals how these features are related to the then socio-cultural context.

Linguistic context, situational context and socio-cultural context have significant restrictive effects upon speech and its comprehension.

Therefore,the restriction of social and cultural context over translated text should be explored from four aspects:social ideology,socio -historical and cultural context,social custom and habit.

The selection of the language used in inaugural speech and its features are influenced by social cultural context and situational context,and serve for the effect of speech and the realization of the function of speech.
