水溶(首见第十四回)北静王,年未弱冠,形容秀美,性情谦和。因祖上与贾府有世交之谊,同难同荣,故从未以异姓相见,更不以王位自居。秦可卿出丧,他特设路祭,在路旁高搭彩棚,设席张筵,和音奏乐,哀悼吊唁。又专请贾宝玉相见。“他对”通灵宝玉”、“称奇道异”了一番,夸奖宝玉果然如“宝”如“玉”,真乃龙驹凤雏“,并把皇上亲赐之鹡鸰念珠一串赠与宝玉。贾宝玉素厌官僚权贵,但平日闻得北静王风流潇洒,不为官俗国体所缚,每思相会,所以相见之下,彼此都有惺惺相惜之意。后北静王独邀贾宝玉至另一室说话,并把仿制的一块“通灵宝玉”赠与宝玉。后四十回写到贾府被查抄,幸得北静王从中翰旋,始得保全,免遭荼毒。
