      中国春秋时期(公元前八至五世纪)占星术盛行,占星家们创"上天变异,州国受殃"的说法,以天空中出现的星象变化来占卜各个地方人世间的吉、凶、祸、福。为此目的,将地上的州、国与星空的区域互相匹配对应,称为分野。《周礼》中所记"保章氏":"以星土辨九州之地,所封封域皆有分星,以观妖祥",就是按照分野来预卜各地吉凶。天区有十二次和二十八宿(或二十八舍)等不同的划分法,所以分野也有不同的对应方式。除此以外,州、国又因时代不同而有变化,所以不同时代的分野也不尽相同。
