Syria keen to make Geneva conference a success: deputy FM
2013-11-05 (Xinhua)   2013-11-05 10:44:34

BEIJING, Nov. 5 (Xinhuanet) -- Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister, Faisal Al-Miqdad, has renewed his country’s commitment to attend the Geneva II conference, which is aimed at reaching a political solution for the Syria crisis.

"We confirmed that we will attend the Geneva talks, whether it were held tomorrow, the day after tomorrow, or a week or month later. This is our steady position. But we also say that we are keen to make the Geneva conference a success," Al-Miqdad said.

"It should be based on stopping violation and terrorism immediately, before entrance to the conference hall."

Efforts to hold a second Geneva peace conference have been threatened by a number of preconditions set by both the Syrian government and its opposition. The Western-backed Syrian National Coalition has announced it will not attend the peace conference unless there’s a strict timetable for President Bashar al-Assad to step down.

The main opposition coalition adds that it will also not attend the conference if Iran is invited.

The Syrian government has branded the rebels as "terrorists", and said earlier that it would not hold talks unless they stop fighting.
