US Secretary of State plays down Saudi rift
(Xinhua)   2013-11-05 10:51:36

BEIJING, Nov. 5 (Xinhuanet) -- U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry is in Saudi Arabia, where he’s held talks with the country’s Foreign Minister, Prince Saudi al-Faisal, and King Abdullah. The two sides have promised to work together to deal with troublesome issues like Syria and Iran, while strongly denying any significant breach of their bilateral relationship.

"The United States appreciates Saudi Arabia leadership supporting the Syrian opposition coalition and its strong commitment to achieving a political solution to the crises... This crisis will not end through military force in our judgment," Kerry said.

Kerry called U.S.-Saudi relations "strategic and enduring". He says the war in Syria can only end with a negotiated solution, but that the U.S. will continue to support Syrian opposition forces.

Kerry also says the U.S. is determined to stop Iran developing nuclear weapons, and that the U.S. will continue to pursue the current track of Middle East peace negotiations, and support economic transformation in Egypt.

Saudi Arabia has recently become concerned over U.S. policy direction on a number of issues. They include a lack of intervention in Syria, America’s positive reaction to the new Iranian leadership, failure to stop Israel building more settlements and a partial withdrawal of backing for Egypt’s military.
