BEIJING, March 3 (Xinhuanet) -- U.S. Secretary of State, John Kerry, has arrived in Egypt to urge the government and the opposition to reach a political consensus, to help the country emerge from an economic crisis. His visit comes ahead of national elections boycotted by the main opposition group- National Salvation Front.
Kerry first met with Arab League Secretary General, Nabil el-Araby, in Cairo. During the talks, he stressed the need for a political deal and reforms in Egypt, to secure much-needed funds from the Inaternational Monetary Fund.
Kerry also met with representatives of major opposition parties in Egypt. But some of the leaders of the National Salvation Front refused to attend the talks. They are angered by Washington’s appeal for the Egyptian opposition to reconsider its boycott of next month’s general election. They say electoral laws favor allies of President Mohamed Morsi.
Kerry is scheduled to hold talks with Morsi and other senior government officials on Sunday.
