BEIJING, Oct. 29 (Xinhuanet) -- Spain is the latest country in Europe to allege having been spied on by the US National Security Agency, the NSA. The US ambassador to Madrid has been summoned to the Spanish Foreign Ministry to provide details over the allegations. Spain’s Foreign Minister says if the spying is confirmed, it could result in a "breakdown in trust" between the two countries.
Spanish newspaper El Mundo has published a document showing the US National Security Agency spied on more than 60 million phone calls in Spain over one month.
The report came as Spain summoned the US ambassador to Madrid to demand answers over the allegations.
Jose Manuela Garcia-Margallo, Spanish Foreign Minister, said, "I have just had a talk with the Spanish Secretary of State of the EU, who hosted the US ambassador and had talked to him before this meeting. The government, through the secretary of state, has relayed to the US ambassador our serious concern over the information that appeared in the media which, if confirmed, would constitute an unacceptable practice between the countries that are both partners and friends. We have asked the ambassador, as we had done on two previous occasions, to hand over the necessary information to the government on a matter that, I insist, if confirmed, could result in a breakdown of the trust which has traditionally been the hallmark of the relations between the two countries."
The newspaper says the document, provided by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden, shows that the NSA monitored the phone calls from December 2012 to January 2013.
The newspaper published part of the document, showing the phone numbers targeted, the places the calls were made from and the duration of the conversations.
Vicente Lozano, News Editor of El Mundo Newspaper, said, "There is a right for complete confidentiality of communications, the NSA has broken this right in Spain. The attorney general needs to open an investigation and press charges. When can this all end?"
The report in El Mundo newspaper comes a week after the French newspaper Le Monde reported similar allegations of US spying in France.
The NSA has been at the centre of a spying row with the EU, after allegations that it accessed tens of thousands of French phone records, and monitored the phone of German chancellor Angela Merkel.
