Spanish FM: Confirmation could result in a "breakdown in trust"

BEIJING, Oct. 29 (Xinhuanet) -- Spain is the latest country in Europe to allege having been spied on by the US National Security Agency, the NSA. The US ambassador to Madrid has been summoned to the Spanish Foreign Ministry to provide details.

The Spanish newspaper, El Mundo, published a document on Monday which showed the NSA had spied on over 60-million phone calls in Spain in just one month. It says the document formed part of papers obtained from ex-NSA contractor Edward Snowden.

Spain summoned the US ambassador in Madrid to express its displeasure over the reports. Foreign Minister, Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo, says if the spying is confirmed, it could result in a "breakdown in trust".

"I have just had a talk with the Spanish Secretary of State of the EU, who hosted the US ambassador and had talked to him before this meeting. The government, through the secretary of state, has relayed to the US ambassador our serious concern over the information that appeared in the media which, if confirmed, would constitute an unacceptable practice between the countries that are both partners and friends. We have asked the ambassador, as we had done on two previous occasions, to hand over the necessary information to the government on a matter that, I insist, if confirmed, could result in a breakdown of the trust which has traditionally been the hallmark of the relations between the two countries," Spanish foreign minister Jose Manuela Garcia-Margallo said.
