Developing countries discuss cooperation for shared dev't

BEIJING, Oct. 29 (Xinhuanet) -- The UN Environment Program’s South-South Development Expo has wrapped up its first day in Nairobi, Kenya’s capital. While the focus is South-to-South information exchange, speakers also note the importance of North-to-South cooperation for springboarding policies.

he Development is a process by which two or more developing countries in the Global South exchange and share development solutions, best practices, skills, resources and technical know-how.

UN Under-Secretary General Achim Steiner, who's also the Executive Director of UNEP, opened a leadership conference highlighting the importance of innovation and forward thinking. The question -- if a global sustainable economy is really practical. The answer -- an inclusive green economy is not only a necessity but also an opportunity.

"And I would depict one small example. We are here in Kenya. Only about 5 years ago Kenya had the choice it could make and energy infrastructure pathway that would go with fossil fuels, coal and essentially reproduce the 20th century energy matrix of the industrialized world. Kenya took a different path. It put a green energy policy into place. It put a feed a tarriff into place. And look, low and behold, a country that is supposedly not able to access the latest technology, is now on the front line of expanding geothermal power, to underpin the massive increase in electricity generating capacity that this nation needs," said Achim Steiner, executive director of UN Environment Program.
