位于磐陀石西,五十三参石下端的岩崖上。有两石酷似海龟,一龟蹲踞崖顶,回首顾盼,似有等候之意;一龟缘石直上,昂首延颈,筋膜尽露,一副着急相。两龟的形态极为传神,令游人叹为观止。相传两龟受龙王之命前来探听观音菩萨说法,只因听得入了 迷,忘了归期,遂化身为石。也有传说,两龟原为一雌一雄,因尘缘未绝,在听法时眉来眼去,顾盼传情,所以被罚作石龟,给修行不诚者作戒。前者传得奇,后者传得妙,各有千秋。清人何辰生在诗中说:“见说磐陀若地灵,普门曾此坐谈经。二龟何事翻成石,想是当年不解听。”这是对两龟的又一种说法。在二龟听法石上端有五十三参石,大者侧立百尺,小者相累若卵,纵横拱峙,参差错列,不仅生态各异,而且移步变形,令人有望而生岌岌自危之感。随着晨昏晴雨的交替和晓雾暮霭的变幻,这群奇谲的山岩,也会呈现出浓淡不同的色相。元代书画家赵孟颍《游补陀》诗云:“涧草岩花多瑞气,石林水府隔尘寰。”普陀山多奇石,而五十三参石是普陀山奇石最荟萃之处。
