This thesis aims at studying the translation of fictional dialogue and analyzing the dialogue translation in Lin Yijin’s and Tang Yongkuan’s Chinese versions of A Farewell to Arms from pragmatic perspective.

This thesis is intended for the study of fictional dialogue in the narrow sense - -- the dialogue between characters in fiction, mainly in the form of direct speech within quotation marks.

So in translating a work of fiction, the translator must attach great importance to fictional conversation.

Pragmatic equivalence in translating fictional dialogues means to completely convey the purpose of communication or the speaker’s intention into another language by translators taking full account of the context, background knowledge and differences between the source and the target language.

This thesis attempts to discuss the specific translation activity—fictional dialogue translation from the abstract philosophical theory of intersubjectivity.
