体长60-75厘米，最大者达1米。生活在低凹沼泽地、 池塘或浅水沟内，几乎完全水栖。永久性童体型，有较多 的幼态性状。眼小，无眼险，有一对鳃孔。四肢极细弱而 短小，具三趾。腭强健，齿锐利。
以昆虫、软体动物、小鱼、蛙和小蛇为食。白天隐匿， 黄昏后较为活跃。每当1-5月在水中配对，雄鲵将精包直接送到雌鲵的泄殖腔内，体内受精。卵大，在长型的卵胶 带内呈链珠状。一般卵产在低凹处的树根、倒木下或潮湿的地方。每次约产卵150-350粒。卵在水中发育，雌鲵有 护卵习性。刚孵化出的幼鲵具外鳃和四肢，全长可达6- 7.5厘米。幼鲵借雨水的冲刷或雨后水位的升高而进入水中。雌鲵第四年达性成熟。
在人工饲养条件下可存活25年。
