车辆识别号码(Vehicle Identification Number,或车架号码),简称VIN,是一组由十七个英数组成,用于汽车上的一组独一无二的号码,可以识别汽车的生产商、引擎、底盘序号及其他性能等资料。

为避免与数字的1,0混淆,英文字母“I”、“O”、“Q”均不会被使用。

结构

车辆识别号码主要有两种制式,第一种是欧盟采用的ISO 3779标准,第二种标准主要用于北美,比第一种更严谨,但两者仍能互相兼容。

生产商识别码

VIN的首三位称为WMI(World Manufacturer Identifier),用作识别生产商的名称及所在国家。每年生产少于500辆汽车的生产者,其VIN的第三位会使用9字,并会使用第12-14位作识别的第二部分。一些生产商会使用VIN的第三位作为汽车车种的分类,例如货车或巴士。以瑞典富豪车厂(Volvo)出产的车辆为例,轿车使用YV1,货车使用YV2,而巴士及客车则使用YV3。
