辖原河西区的义井、罗城二个街道办事处,原南郊区的晋源、晋祠、姚村、金胜四个乡镇。

区政府驻晋源镇(新建)。

区域界线:北即万柏林区之南界,东抵汾河,西南以晋源、晋祠、姚村之乡镇西边界为界。

全区人口20.2万,其中非农业人口9.7万,农业人口10.5万。面积287.6平方公里,其中建成区面积10.6平方公里。

晋源区是行政区划重新划分诞生的新区。晋源区历史悠久,从公元前497年古晋阳城创建到公元979年宋太宗毁废晋阳城,这里一直是我国北方的政治、军事、文化中心。晋源区文物名胜丰富,晋祠、天龙山石窟、龙山石窟、蒙山大佛等声名远著,开发旅游资源将是晋源区的经济重点。

晋源新城的规划已经付诸实施,在不久的将来,一个崭新城区将在古晋阳大地上诞生。
