指汉语语词由固有的意义而转换借代出来的另外的意义。例如"昔"字，甲骨文作,象日在水浪下,当即潮汐的本字，后来转为"一夕"的"夕"。《春秋穀梁传》庄公八年说:"日入至于星出谓之昔。"《庄子·齐物论》说:"是今日适越而昔至也。"进而转为"往昔"、"昔日"之"昔"。又如"社稷"一词，古人称土神为"社","稷"为五谷之长,立稷而祭，以稷为谷神。古时天子、诸侯都要祭祀社稷，后来就以"社稷"一词称国家。又如"齿"是牙齿，年龄也称年齿。人以年齿相比列,凡不能比次在一起,非同一类的就说"不齿"。语言中又有"齿冷"一词，是讥笑的意思。张口笑久就齿冷，所以"齿冷"指可笑而言。这些都是转义。转义与原来的词义内容多少总是有联系的，假借义则全无联系，两者不同，不能相混。
