有些杂质在同一半导体中既可起施主作用,又可起受主作用,这种杂质称为双性杂质。杂质的双性行为的起因可以不同。一种情况是双性杂质在晶格中只占据一种位置,但能给出或得到电子而起施主或受主作用,对于这种情况一般受主能级在施主能级之上,因为只有杂质尚未给出电子时才谈得上接受电子。另一种情况是杂质在晶格中占据不同的位置,施主和受主分别由所占据的不同的晶格位置决定。
