指个人对自身是男性或女性的认知、确信和态度。这种观念形成于童年早期，一般在3岁时已经确立。性身份一旦确立后很难改变。促进性身份形成的因素包括：生物因素和教养因素两个方面。生物因素只是在出生前胎儿期发挥其决定性别的作用；教养因素对出生后的婴儿性身份的形成具有更重要的影响。如对两性畸形的儿童不论遗传学方面性别是男性(性染色体为XY)或女性(性染色体为XX)，只要父母把他当作女孩教养，便形成女性的性身份，把他当作男孩教养，便形成男性的性身份。
