1.战国时，国与国之间为防御敌人，在边境上设亭，置亭长。秦汉时在乡村每十里设一亭，置亭长，掌治安，捕盗贼，理民事，兼管停留旅客。多以服兵役期满的人充任。此外设于城内和城厢的称"都亭"，设于城门的称"门亭"，亦设亭长，职责同上。东汉后渐废。 2.唐代尚书省各部在都事﹑主事之下设亭长，掌省门开闭和通传等事务。
