1975年10月29日由原国立体育学院和原高等体育师范学院合并而成。它的任务是:①从事教育学、医学、运动技术方面的基础科学和应用科学的研究；②培养高水平的体育教师、运动技术顾问、教练员和其他从事体育工作的人员；③训练国家的运动队和促进高水平竞技运动的发展。这个学院由管理委员会和院长领导,下设:①高水平运动部；②师资干部培养部；③医学部；④科研处。全院有学生2000多名，其中由各协会推荐来的高水平运动员1500名，培养体育教师 500名。在这里学习的运动员分属 21个运动项目，按年龄、文化程度分为136 个班进行训练和文化学习。
