性质:一般为革兰氏阳性菌,但有的种为革兰氏染色不定或呈阴性;菌体为杆状,约为(0.3~2.2)×(1.2~7.0)μm;能形成内生孢子,可呈柱状、椭圆形或球形,其位置一般在细胞顶部、中央或二者之间;菌株孢子的形成取决于培养条件,锰对某些菌形成孢子有利;属有机化能营养,可进行呼吸代谢,发酵代谢或呼吸和发酵两者兼有的代谢;营养体的最高生长温度大约在25~75℃以上,最低为5~45℃;pH范围是2左右到7.5~8;耐盐浓度为2%~25%。DNA的G+C含量为32%~62%(mol)(熔解温度和浮力密度法)。
