本种是木兰科中单种属植物，对木兰科分类系统和植物地理区系研究有科学价值。且本树木材细致、美观、坚韧、耐腐、抗虫，属优质木材。为了保护好这一具有重要意义的树种，确立为国家三级保护植物。
合果木为常绿乔木，树高25-35米，胸径70-100厘米，树皮褐色。叶互生椭圆形，长6-22厘米，宽4-7厘米。花单生叶腋、芳香，花被片18-21片。外两轮12片，倒披针形，长2.5-2.7厘米；内轮6-9片，披针形，长2厘米。雄蕊多数，长6-7毫米，花药长5毫米。雌蕊群狭卵形，长5毫米。聚合果肉质，圆柱形，长6-10厘米，直径4厘米。果成熟后开裂，露出外种皮为鲜红色的种子。
本种分布于云南西南部，热带季雨林和雨林山谷中，印度、缅甸、泰国和越南等地亦有分布。在分布地区应加强管护，严禁砍伐，同时加强护苗，促进繁殖更新。选择适当的立地条件引种造林。
