Through the analyses of the strategies of positive politeness,negative politeness and off-record,the author suggests that such strategies should be used tactfully according to different situations.

Furthermore,it mainly analyzes the application of positive and negative politeness among the dialogues between shop assistants and customers.

The experiment to analyze invitation refusals between different sexes conducted on Chinese College students supported the views of negative politeness and face threatening acts identified by Brown and Levinson.
