形态特征:莎草科荸荠属水生草本植物，高15-60厘米。有细长匍匐根状茎。其顶端生球茎，即荸荠。秆多数，丛生，直立，圆柱状，中空，直径2-5毫米，有多数横隔膜，光滑无毛。叶退化，只在秆基部有2-3个叶鞘，绿黄色、紫红色或褐色，长3-20厘米。夏季开花，小穗顶生，圆柱状，长2-4厘米，淡绿色。小坚果宽倒卵形，长约3毫米，成熟时棕色。
生境分布:我国大部分地区栽培。朝鲜、日本、越南、印度也有。
用途:球茎食用或药用。清热止渴、利湿化痰、降血压。
