姑嫂树是汉口新华下路与京广铁路相交处以北至张公堤一带的泛称。这一带是汉口后湖地区的高地，附近有陈家河。
有个姓刘的船民在陈家河上以撑船为生，他和他的妻子、妹妹在此筑墩建屋居住，称为刘家墩。刘家姑嫂在家，除种地外，还在农闲时到墩西的余家塘埂上摆摊卖茶、卖稀饭。为了便于过往行人歇息，她们在塘埂上种了一棵棠梨树。此树长大后，枝繁叶茂，粗壮高耸，不仅可为行人歇息时遮荫，而且成为这一带水陆通道的显著标志。从此，人们称这一带为姑嫂树，而不再称刘家墩。
