补充资料:建始高坪巨猿洞
高坪巨猿洞位于建始县城东北33公里的高坪乡高店子集镇西南太阳槽半山腰处。东洞口呈三角形,高2米宽3.8米,西洞口呈长方形,高2.1米宽1.8米。洞内呈管道状,洞壁光滑,洞底平坦,高低变化不大。内有支洞两个。东洞弯弯曲曲很规则地以东北—西南、西北—东南方向延伸。自东口入,初见狭窄,匍匐行走二、三十米渐见开阔,百余公尺后有积水潭淖,泥泞不可涉足。转向西行,洞内坎坷干燥,堆积土深十余米。可通西洞口,近处可见土石封堆过半的洞外微光,可背顶岩石腹及黄土爬行而出,整个洞穴全长315米。
20世纪70年代,当地农民以挖洞穴龙骨出卖赚钱为由,在东洞口刨开泥层获得化石向供销社出售。化石碾转出口到香港,被中国科学院古脊椎动物专家发现,追源寻至建始高坪,继而发现巨猿化石30000余枚。洞穴地理位置为东径110°、北纬30°39′,洞底海拔740米,其下有今已枯竭的古河床,唯有巨细卵石流砂,北边一条小河自南流入巨穴,伏流2000米而出,洞内伴生动物层种多样,为世界罕见。自上世纪70年代以来,中国科学院古脊椎动物与古人类研究所的专家郑韶华等人多次来建始进行科学考察,并将《早期人类起源及其环境背景研究》科研课题列入国家“九五攀登项目”。该地被湖北省人民政府公布为省级文物保护单位,现建有牌楼和展墙于洞穴东西,与“318”国道和未来的高速公路及万宜铁路遥遥相望。
