铁路电气化将既有内燃或蒸汽机车牵引的运营铁路改造为电力机车牵引的铁路的过程已实现电力机车牵引的铁路称为电气化铁路。 电力机车牵引的铁路运输与内燃或蒸汽机车牵引的铁路运输相比,有明显的优越性,主要是牵引功率大,速度快,牵引力大,节约能源,基本上无空气污染.可以用于高原地区、缺水地区,在大坡度、大运量的铁路线上最为适宜。中国的电气化铁路采用国际通用的国际标准制式,即交流单相工频25千伏牵引供电系统,电能从发电厂经电力变电所、输电线、铁路牵引变电所和接触网馈电给电力机车,实现电能到机械能的转换,形成运输能力。在电气化铁路的沿线需要建设一定数量的牵引变电所,沿电力机车走行的铁路上方,均需架设接触网,向电力机车供电。在站场内,股道数量较多,接触网需用软横跨或硬横跨支撑,并且根据股道的用途,将接触网分段分束;在区问,经常采用腕臂支柱。如果是复线铁路,上行线和下行线的接触网需分别独立架设,以保证铁路运输的可靠性。为了适应电力机车具有大牵引力的特点,需要车站存放到发列车的线路有效长达到一定长度,每列车牵引550。吨时,需有效长1 05。米,每列车牵引4 000吨时,需有效长850米。至1995年底.中国的国有电气化铁路运营里程已达970。公里.占全路运营里程的17.8%,电力机车完成总重吨公里占全路机车完成总重吨公里的24.9%。机车保有量2517台,占机车总数比重为16.6月。今后牵引动力的发展方向是以电力牵引为主,适当发展内燃牵引,既有线的扩能改造的出路主要是复线和电气化;建设中的京广、湘黔、包兰、成昆、哈大线,在近期均将实现电力牵引。新线建设中有相当数量的铁路是一次实现电力牵引,如已建成的京秦、大秦铁路。
