   单子叶植物纲姜亚纲的一科,多为短茎附生草本,但有时也为陆生耐旱植物(如菠萝)。叶互生,在短茎上形成叶丛,或有时散生于稍长茎上,狭而具平行脉,时具刺齿。

   花两性或有时单性,形成简单或复合的穗状,总状或头状花序,通常具艳色苞片或稀为单花。萼与花瓣各3,花瓣分离或微联合,常在基部边缘具一对鳞片状密腺。雄蕊6,2轮,3心皮联合成3室,上位子房或全部下位。果为浆果、蒴果、稀为肉质聚花果(凤梨),种子有时具翅或羽状冠毛。约有51属2100余种,主产热带南美洲。凤梨通称菠萝(波罗),为有名的热带水果之一,于19世纪传入中国,已为台湾、广西、广东和云南热带的习见栽培植物。该科还有许多种供室内盆栽观赏。根据子房位置,果实类型,种子特征和叶齿有无,陆生或附生等可分该科为3亚科。
