铜发质是明朝嘉靖年间创制的~种大型火炮。炮全重500斤,发射铅弹每个重4斤,石弹大如斗,炮管中间粗,两端略细,炮身携有云波纹图案,安装在四轮炮座上。这种炮形体庞大,发射火力异常猛烈,炮声震天,须在炮位一侧挖掘土坑,炮手点火后立即掩身坑内,以免震伤。兵书上描述铜发愤的威力:“墙遇之即透,屋遇之即推,树遇之即折,人吉通之,即成血植,山遇之即深入几尺”。火药发射时产生的强大的冲击力,“其风能煽杀乎人,其声能震杀乎人”。从中我们可以想象到当时的钢发质产生的威力在古人眼里可谓是惊天动地。这种巨炮在明末外国的红夷大炮输入中国之前,可算数一数二的了。
