刚玉 corundum 成分为铝的氧化物(Al2O3)矿物。因莫氏硬度高达9,主要用作高档磨料。晶体属三方晶系,多呈腰鼓形的六方柱状,有的呈针状或板状。集合体呈块状或柱状。通常呈白、灰、黄等色。若含少量Cr3+呈红色,名红宝石;若含少量Ti4+和Fe2+则呈蓝色,名蓝宝石;有的晶体中含有六次对称分布的针状金红石或其他包裹体,则可产生六射星芒,称星光红宝石或星光蓝宝石,都是名贵宝石。刚玉为玻璃光泽,无解理,但因常存在依底面或菱面体面形成的聚片双晶而出现裂理。比重3.98。产于相对贫硅的火成岩和变质岩中,并常见于冲积砂矿中。美国的北卡罗林纳州和乔治亚州,俄罗斯的乌拉尔山脉、南非特兰斯瓦等为主要产地。
