Voting for Australian federal election begins
(Xinhua)   2013-09-07 10:56:50

BEIJING, Sept. 7 (Xinhuanet) -- Polling booths opened at 8 a.m. local time on Saturday in the eastern states of Australia for voters to decide on the country’s next leader.

More than 14.7 million voters will cast their ballots to decide on the 150 seats in the House of Representatives. The party which secures more than half of the seats will have the right to lead the country for the next three years.

Opposition leader Tony Abbott seems on track to guide his Liberal Party-led coalition to a victory in Saturday’s election. Opinion polls have given the party a commanding lead over Prime Minister Kevin Rudd’s ruling Labor Party. There are a number of high profile candidates running in this year’s election, including the founder of WikiLeaks Julian Assange, and Flamboyant billionaire Clive Palmer.
