BEIJING, Sept. 7 (Xinhuanet) -- Thousands of Muslim Brotherhood supporters have staged nationwide rallies, leading to clashes in some areas. One person was killed in Damietta, northeast Egypt, when residents tried to block a Brotherhood rally from taking place.

Clashes also occurred in Egypt’s second largest city, Alexandria. Protesters and opponents of the Brotherhood threw stones at each other, as thousands started to march along a main thoroughfare in the city.

Egypt’s military-led government is reported to have now agreed to formally dissolve the Muslim Brotherhood as a registered non-governmental organisation, although that’s not been officially confirmed.

Egypt’s judiciary is currently looking into a number of cases that could decide the fate of the group. Many of the group’s members face charges of inciting or taking part in acts of violence against the police and army.
