BEIJING, Aug. 25 (Xinhuanet) -- Egypt’s government says a widely-imposed evening curfew will be shortened immediately by two hours as a response to citizens’ demands, as unrest in the country wanes.
The government says the evening curfew, imposed on 14 regions, will now begin at 9 pm rather than 7 pm, and last until 6 am. However, the curfew hours on Fridays will not be reduced, as protests are often held on Fridays, after prayers.
The government imposed the curfew on August the 14th, shortly after the interim rulers announced a nationwide month-long state of emergency due to the turmoil over dispersing pro-deposed president Mohammed Morsi sit-ins.
Official reports say nearly 1,000 people have been killed in the clashes across the country. Meanwhile, hundreds of supporters of ousted president Morsi have taken to the streets of Cairo. The protests remained largely peaceful on Friday, though a few clashes have been reported.
