BEIJING, July 21 (Xinhuanet) -- Candidates are making final appeals to Japanese voters ahead of Sunday’s upper house election. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s coalition is expected to have an easy win.
With the economy picking up steam, many people are giving credit to the prime minister’s economic policies, dubbed "Abenomics". They have lifted stocks and eased pressure on exporters by weakening the yen.
Abe has promised to carry out economic reforms that will make Japan more competitive. Polls indicate that the election will give Abe’s Liberal Democratic Party and its junior coalition partner New Komeito a majority of seats in the 242-seat upper house. That would give Abe’s coalition control of both chambers of parliament, making it easier to pass legislation.
While his main election rival the Democratic Party of Japan voiced criticisms of his economic policies, Abe reassured his supporters in Tokyo that reviving the long-stagnant economy is the top priority.
Abe said, "There’s no doubt that we are now on the verge of economic recovery, where the money flow becomes cyclical within society. This is the only way to go."
"Whether your wage will really go up and whether the Japanese economic recovery will be sustainable - these are the big questions," said Democratic Party of Japan Rep. Banri Kaieda.
