BEIJING, July 8 (Xinhuanet) -- The death toll from a runaway freight train explosion in the small Canadian town of Lac-Megantic, Quebec has risen to three. Police say they expect to find more bodies.
The driverless train carrying oil derailed and exploded early Saturday, destroying dozens of buildings in the center of the town.
The eruptions sent residents of the town scrambling through the streets under the intense heat of towering fireballs. More than 1,000 residents were evacuated because of poor air quality and had to find shelter elsewhere.
Quebec’s provincial police lieutenant said that fires were preventing rescuers from reaching parts of the train still burning. He added that some of the other people who were missing are likely dead, but did not say how many were still missing.
