Turkey reinforces navy in Mediterranean as tension mounts with Syria

ISTANBUL, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- Turkey is reinforcing its position in the Mediterranean Sea in a bid to put more pressure on the Syrian government following the escalation of tensions along the border, a report said here on Friday.

Daily News reported that a number of warships and submarines have been sent to the country's bases in the Mediterranean from its northwestern province of Golcuk, where the Turkish Naval Forces' main base is located. Full story

UN Security Council calls for Turkey-Syria restraint

UNITED NATIONS, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations Security Council on Thursday strongly condemned the incident of artillery shelling in Turkey from Syria and called on both countries to exercise restraint.

"The members of the Security Council condemned in the strongest terms the shelling by the Syrian armed forces of the Turkish town of Akcakale," said a statement released to the press here by Guatemala's Permanent UN Representative Gert Rosenthal, whose delegation holds the Council's rotating presidency for this month.
