感觉统合是指进入大脑的各种感觉,刺激信息在中枢神经系统形成有效的组合。这一过程包括两个方面,其一,在同一时间内多种感觉刺激信息转入中枢,由大脑进行统一加工处理,再协调相应的器官或组织做出适当的反应。其二,在接受新的信息的同时,大脑要找出贮存于记忆中的经验信息,将新的感觉与以往的经验进行比较并使之协调,进一步指挥身体对环境做出适当的反应。感觉统合理论认为,身体对环境所做的任何反应都是以感觉输入为前提而反应的形式、程度等则与大脑的统合作用有关。从这一观点出发认为,感觉统合是每个孩子成长过程中必须有的学习过程。没有感觉统合大脑则无法发展。任何原因使感觉刺激信息不能在中枢神经系统进行有效的组合则整个身体就不能和谐有效地运作,此种感觉与统合障碍现象称为感觉统合失调,是儿童学习障碍的主要原因之一。常见为前庭平衡觉、触觉、听觉等感觉刺激与统合功能失调。加强感觉刺激信息的输入,促进大量功能的完善是其治疗的理论依据。
