香料烟是异香型和混合型卷烟的重要原料。我国自195l年从土耳其引入香料烟，开姑从南到北多点试验，仅在绍兴市新昌县荷花塘村试种成功，以后种植面积逐年扩大。1953年开始设立标准和牌价收购，成为全国香料烟的主产县。70年代切，新昌香料烟年产量150一200吨。后在嵊县扩种获得成功，1978年开始大面积种植，成为我市又一个香料烟主产县。80年代初，两县总产量已超过1000吨，最高年(1982年)产量达1750吨。1986年以前，我市香料烟一直占全国总产量的80％以上。近年来山于各省积极试种，我市所占比例逐年下降，至1987年全市香料烟总产1350吨，约占全国总产的57％。目前，除新昌、嵊县外，诸暨、上虞也有试种。
香料烟又称东方型烟，属茄科，为一年生草本植物。株型紧凑，叶片小， 茎秆细，芳香气味好，易燃烧，香浓味醇，故有“香料烟”之美称。据测定，烟叶中含总糖14．50％，蛋白质14．02％，总氮2．62％，尼古丁2．16％，施木克值1．03％。
绍兴市所产的香料烟品质优良，具有叶小色黄、香味浓郁、败味纯净、畅适、燃烧性好等特点。有典型的香料烟风格，产品畅销全国各地。国内著名烟厂如上海卷烟厂、北京烟厂、青岛卷烟厂等是绍兴市香料烟的传统用户；云南、青岛、北京等地的几只出口卷烟牌号中均需用绍兴市香料烟叶。
香料烟喜温喜光，抗旱能力强，耐瘠薄，但忌连作，不耐涝，易感染黑胫病和青枯病。香料烟为嗜钾作物，对钾、磷元素的需求量较大。
