古代文论术语，指对文学艺术鉴赏的一种态度和方法。"涵泳"一词,出现得较早,如左思《吴都赋》中已有"涵泳乎其中"，韩愈的《岳阳楼别窦司直诗》也有"星河尽涵泳，俯仰迷下上"之句。"涵泳"有时也称"涵咀"，如陆龟蒙《复友生论文书》所说"每涵咀义味"。到宋代，程朱理学又提出了这一概念。程颐《河南程氏粹言·论学篇》："入德必自敬始，故容貌必恭也，言语必谨也。虽然，优游涵泳而养之可也，拘迫则不能入矣。"《朱子语类》五《性理》二："此语或中或否，皆出臆度，要之未可遽论，且涵咏玩索，久之当自有见。"程朱理学家讲到学习时，主张"涵咏"，本指在学道时，心理状态要从容不迫，沉潜其中，不断玩索，自有所得。这就是所谓"优游涵咏"，或"涵咏玩索"。"优游"，即从容不迫。后来这一说法被广泛地运用到诗文评论和鉴赏中，指对艺术作品的鉴赏应该沉潜其中，反复玩索或玩味，以求获得其中的三昧。由于艺术作品言理、言事，常常并非质直言之，而是比兴言之，仅仅依靠理性判断是不行的，必须全身心地深入其中,进行玩索,才能真正感知其中的奥秘或"味外之旨"。所以"涵泳"也就成了艺术鉴赏中的这种态度和方法的代称。
