分子式C10H6O3。它存在于胡桃科植物胡桃及其同属植物黑核桃的未成熟的外果皮(青皮)中,具有止血和抗菌活性,也曾用于治疗湿疹、牛皮癣和发癣。
胡桃醌为橙色针状结晶(自苯、石油醚中结晶);熔点155℃,可升华;能随水蒸气挥发;微溶于热水,可溶于醇、醚,易溶于氯仿、苯,溶于碱溶液呈紫红色。
与胡桃醌共存的还有它的几种还原衍生物,其中包括:α-胡桃氢醌,熔点168~170℃;α-胡桃氢醌-4-葡萄糖苷,熔点216℃(分解);β-胡桃氢醌。它们都有抗菌活性。α-胡桃氢醌易被空气氧化成胡桃醌。
