英国最著名的剧团之一。前身是W.莎士比亚诞生地斯特拉特福的莎士比亚纪念剧院剧团，1961年受皇家封号更名为皇家莎士比亚剧团，由政府的艺术委员会资助。1960年，P.霍尔任剧团导演，他决定建立一个永久性的演出团体并且发展其独特的风格。为了把剧团常年聚集在一起，他在奥尔德维奇剧院为剧团建立了一个在伦敦的演出点，使剧团得以在莎剧之外，也上演现代的先锋派剧目。霍尔在与P.布鲁克和圣-丹尼斯共同导演下,创造了一种独具特色的现代莎士比亚风格，演出B.布莱希特、H.品特和其他当代作家的作品。1968年，剧团新起的年轻导演T.纳恩(1940～ )从霍尔手中接任剧团的艺术导演。剧团又在伦敦的巴比堪剧院建立了一个新的伦敦演出点。现在，皇家莎士比亚剧团在斯特拉特福和伦敦不仅拥有三座较大的剧院，还建立了小剧院，进行实验性的演出。
