国际经济系充分发挥北京外国语大学传统的语言优势，并为学生提供专业技能的强化训练，培养英语语言基本功过硬，又具备扎实的国际经济、贸易、金融理论基础与专业技能、能够运用英语从事国际经贸、金融、商务工作的国际化人才。本系主要为国家机关、中外金融机构、跨国公司、大型企业集团等培养复合型国际经贸人才。本系每年都有一些毕业生以优异的成绩考入国内外知名大学继续深造，如中国人民银行总行研究生部、中国人民大学、复旦大学、对外经贸大学、美国的耶鲁大学、英国的伦敦经济学院等。
