Through a study of the available historical documents and an analysis of the Yongchang Road and the Rinan Road which the envoys of the Shan State took, the author has reached the following conclusion that the Shan State was a small or medium-size state in the Tianzhu Kingdom on the Indian Subcontinent.

| 掸人 Shans 亚洲中南半岛西部缅甸民族。主要分布在缅甸掸邦，其余散居在克耶邦、克伦邦和缅甸中部。另有少数分布在泰国。属蒙古人种南亚类型。使用掸语，属汉藏语系壮侗语族。有文字，但主要用于佛教经典，很少用于文化教育。多信小乘佛教，佛寺遍及各村寨。小孩不分男女，五、六岁时要到村庙学习。男孩到十四、五岁还要削发当一次沙弥。掸人主要从事农业，种植水稻、豆类、茶叶、甘蔗和罂粟等，少数人兼营手工业或商业。锻冶、珠宝、漆器、纺织、编织等手工业发达。村中广场有定期集市。青年男女自由恋爱，行一夫一妻制。人死后请和尚念经、吃斋，一般行土葬。 |
