Chan & Dai nationalities originate from the Luoyue branch of the ethnic groups of Baiyue,whose ancestor were called Liao nationality during the South & North Dynasty,and had distributed in the connection of Southwestern and Middle Southern Peninsula in China in early time,as well as had the trend of expanding to the south gradually.
掸傣民族共源于百越民族群体中的骆越,其先民在南北朝时期被称为僚族,很早就分布在中国西南与中南半岛的结合部,并有逐渐向南扩展的趋势,当近现代国家产生以后,原来有族源关系的各部分,开始分属于不同国家,出现了虽有关系但又有区别的掸、佬、泰等族称,这反映了近现代国家观念意识之下新民族群体的诞生,同源异流民族的分化与发展最终完成。

| 掸人 Shans 亚洲中南半岛西部缅甸民族。主要分布在缅甸掸邦，其余散居在克耶邦、克伦邦和缅甸中部。另有少数分布在泰国。属蒙古人种南亚类型。使用掸语，属汉藏语系壮侗语族。有文字，但主要用于佛教经典，很少用于文化教育。多信小乘佛教，佛寺遍及各村寨。小孩不分男女，五、六岁时要到村庙学习。男孩到十四、五岁还要削发当一次沙弥。掸人主要从事农业，种植水稻、豆类、茶叶、甘蔗和罂粟等，少数人兼营手工业或商业。锻冶、珠宝、漆器、纺织、编织等手工业发达。村中广场有定期集市。青年男女自由恋爱，行一夫一妻制。人死后请和尚念经、吃斋，一般行土葬。 |
