Through a study of the available historical documents and an analysis of the Yongchang Road and the Rinan Road which the envoys of the Shan State took, the author has reached the following conclusion that the Shan State was a small or medium-size state in the Tianzhu Kingdom on the Indian Subcontinent.

| 掸国 Shan，Kingdom of 缅甸境内的古国。又称擅国。故地在今缅甸东北掸邦一带。据中国史书《 后汉书·西南夷传 》等记载，永元九年（公元97年） 、永宁元年（120）和永建六年（131）掸国王雍由调先后3次遣使至中国通好 ， 这是中缅两国最早建立邦交和文化交流的开始。其杂技魔术的传入，在中国产生了深远的影响。记载中说这些演员自称是海西人。“海西即大秦，掸国西南通大秦”。中外学者对这个大秦有二说：一说指南印度，即《法显传》中的“哒亲”；另一说指罗马帝国。这二说都说明当时的缅甸位于中国西南通往印度乃至罗马的途经要地，在沟通东西方交通和经济文化交流中，起过重要的媒介作用。 |
