A detailed comparative study of Eileen Chang’s renowned novella the Golden Cangue and its English translation as well as the textual relationship between the source text(ST) and the target text(TT) in both the micro level and macro level shows that Leuven-Zwart’s transeme model can be revised to identify major translation shifts in both the micro and macro structures.

This thesis, by making use of Catford’s theory of translation shifts, attempts to analyze, in specific ways, the various shifts needed for the successful production of adequate Chinese versions of English literary works, with two Chinese versions of Jane Eyre as source materials for study.

Through the introduction of the origin,essence and classification of the theory of translation shift,it aims at emphasizing the necessity of translation shifts in the process of translation.
