为豆科植物红豆树的种子。
【植物形态】
红豆树，又名：鄂西红豆树、江阴红豆树。 乔木，高9～15米。树皮灰色，光滑。单数羽状复叶，互生；长12～20厘米；小叶5～7枚，近革质，长椭圆形或长椭圆状卵形，长5～12厘米，宽2.5～5厘米，先端渐尖，基部楔形或钝，无毛，下面灰白色，边全缘。圆锥花序顶生或腋生；花白色或淡红色，少有香气；萼钟状，密生黄棕色短柔毛，裂片短，几圆形；花冠蝶形，花瓣均具爪；雄蕊10，分离；子房上位，无毛，有胚珠5～6个，花柱1，紫色，弯曲，柱头斜生。荚果木质，扁平，圆形或椭圆形，长4～6.5厘米，宽2.5～4厘米，先端喙状。种子1～2粒，鲜红色，光亮，近圆形，长1.3～2厘米，种脐长约9毫米。花期4～5月。果期10月。 生于河旁或林边。分布陕西、江苏、湖北、广西、四川。
【采集】
秋末冬初采种子，备用。
【化学成分】
本属多种植物含有N-甲基金雀花碱、N-甲基四氢金雀花碱、红豆树宁碱、黄花木碱等生物碱。
【性味】
《四川常用中草药》："性平，味苦，有小毒。"
【功用主治】
《四川常用中草药》："理气，通经。治疝气，腹痛，血滞经闭。"
【用法与用量】
内服：煎汤，3～5钱。
