    原子除基态之外的其他可能定态。原子受到激发 ,能级升高而处于激发态。处于激发态的原子是不稳定的 ,其平均寿命是有限的,因而激发态能级有一定的宽度。原子激发态的寿命一般为1×10-8~1×10-9秒,能级宽度为1×10-7~1×10-6电子伏特。亚稳态的寿命要长得多,能级宽度则要窄得多。原子从高激发态跃迁到低激发态或基态可发射光子。
